Better a little with the fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil. (17) Better a meal of vegetables where there is love than a fattened calf with hatred. Proverbs 15:16-17
Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife. Proverbs 17:1
Not just to be around them, but to get into them. What do you remember good about your parents? TIME. Deut. 6:7
About scripture: Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
You can’t do 3 if you don’t do 1 and 2. Daddy’s must provide an umbrella of spiritual leadership.Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6 They need your teaching about God—they will get taught something from somebody. Teach them how to pray.
They will do what you do, not what you say—you are the standard!
Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God. 1 Cor. 10:32
They need to see you have time with God. They need to see you praying. Don’t raise your voice. Don’t talk about others negatively. Love them unconditionally. Angry parents always raise angry kids—parents that control themselves raise children that are able to control themselves.
Don’t provoke children
Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged. (or lose heart) Col. 3:21
Lose heart is not the normal Greek word for heart. It is the Greek word “whuo,” meaning to “rush”—”don’t make him lose his rush or ambitions.” If you are not satisfied or pleased with him, he will not seek to move forward in life. They need tons of encouragement and will get it somewhere. (bad kids)
To be treated uniquely
Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6
“In the way he should go…” Allow him to be unique, although not just like you. The child is in God’s image not yours. Your job is to figure out what God made them to do. (i.e. piano, sports, artist, academic, outdoors, extravert, intravert, etc.) “Why can’t you be more like your brother…” is not good. Be excited about what God has made, not frustrated about what God did not make!
Affection (physical or emotional)
Someone will love them if you don’t. They will get it somewhere. Dads—keep loving on your children until they fly out of the nest.
Discipline and love consistency
Hate the sin not the sinner. Discipline the action--don’t attack the character of the child. Be consistent with love and discipline the same each time.
